The consultation workshops of the “Go-Just” project for fair agri-food transitions in Thessaly were successfully held

January was a particularly active month for Go-Just , as the research team organized four policy co-creation workshops in the cities of Thessaly, the region selected by the research project as a model region for the development and implementation of just agri-food transitions. In Larissa, Karditsa and Volos , farmers, members of agricultural cooperatives and TOEB actively participated in workshops that functioned as an open consultation and were held under the auspices of the Region of Thessaly .

The workshops focused on three critical issues concerning the transition towards a more sustainable and equitable agri-food system: “Water resources and crops” , “The challenge of crop restructuring” and “Agricultural production and resilience of communities in Magnesia” . In total, over 180 representatives of social partners participated, from farming communities, cooperatives, research institutions, the plant propagation material, agro-supply and agri-food processing industries. At least 16 workshops were organized to co-formulate and co-design socio-technical pathways for a sustainable future. Participants had the opportunity not only to evaluate the proposed scenarios for the agri-food transition, but also to co-formulate new proposals, based on their own needs and experiences. The discussions highlighted key issues arising from the participants’ long-term experience while also highlighting possible future paths to address current challenges.

The Go-Just research team will process all the positions and proposals collected, in order to form a comprehensive final text, which will be utilized by the Region of Thessaly , in the context of the design of the new agricultural model of the region, contributing to the creation of a more sustainable, resilient and socially just agri-food system. The active participation of farmers and cooperatives in this process demonstrates the importance of cooperation between the scientific community and local producers for the formulation of policies that respond to the real needs of agricultural production and the rural communities of Thessaly.

We would like to thank the THESGI Cooperative, the Tavropos TOEB and the Southwest Magnesia Olive Groves Association for the co-organization , and the JOIST Innovation Center, the Kierion Hotel and the Domotel Xenia Volos for their hospitality.
